[Top 10] Games Like Team Fortress 2 (Games Better Than Team Fortress 2 In Their Own Way)

Top 10 Games like Team Fortress 2 (that are better in their own way)
Updated:
20 Oct 2023

For many gamers, myself included, Team Fortress 2 is an irreplaceable classic. Over the years it has provided us countless hours of fun, and it might be tempting to keep wearing those nostalgia goggles and say TF2 is the be all and end all of first person shooters, but the fact of the matter is that the game’s last major update was back in 2017, 5 years ago! After pouring hundreds, even thousands of hours into Team Fortress 2, many players feel like they’ve seen all the game has to offer and are looking elsewhere for the kind of chaotic fun they used to get out of TF2, which is why I’ll be ranking the Top 10 Games Like TF2 (That are better in their own way)

10. Half Life 2 (PC/Xbox/Playstation/Android)

Half Life 2 takes place years after the original, where the unforeseen consequences of Gordon Freeman’s actions have led to an alien empire conquering Earth, and it’s his job to liberate the planet. Gameplay wise, it’s a single player experience with an emphasis on puzzle solving and exploration, and just like TF2, it takes full advantage of the Source engine’s physics! If you love blast jumping, then you might just get a kick out of the gravity gun

9. Apex Legends (PC/Xbox/Playstation/Switch/Android/iOS)

Apex Legends is a Battle Royale, one of the biggest trends in FPS games. Like most other Battle Royales, Apex Legends pits large groups of enemies against each other in a free-for-all, where players scavenge for equipment and scout out unlucky enemies in a massive map that slowly shrinks as the game goes on and players are eliminated. It’s a formula that’s proved itself, but if you’re from the previous generation of shooters then it might be hard to get into this subgenre of FPS. Luckily, Apex Legends is practically tailor-made for Team Fortress 2 veterans! Not only does it have several different classes (or “Legends”) to choose from, but it’s also a team game, with 20 squads of 3 players fighting each other, and has plenty of interesting movement mechanics waiting for you to master!

8. Titanfall 2 (PC/Xbox/Playstation)

7. Splatoon 3 (Switch)

Splatoon 3 is a third person shooter where your guns shoot ink instead of bullets, and the objective is based on how much ground you can cover instead of how many players you can kill. You can still kill other players of course, but painting is a better way to spend your time. There’s also a large arsenal of weapons to choose from, you have your standard guns as well as sniper rifles and miniguns (keep in mind these all shoot paint), with some options you’ll never see in other shooter games like rollers, buckets, paintbrushes, and umbrellas. You might be wondering why this game is on the list if it’s so different from Team Fortress 2, and just about every other FPS as a matter of fact, but that’s exactly it; Team Fortress 2 is a game that’s completely unique, and Splatoon is one of the few titles that matches it's sheer originality, something that TF2 fans are sure to appreciate

6. Valorant (PC)

5. Plants V.S Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 (PC/Xbox/Playstation)

Plants VS Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is a third person shooter based on Plants V.S Zombies. Yes, that Plants V.S Zombies, the game where you grow plants to defend your lawn from zombies. Garden Warfare 2 is set in the same world, but gameplay wise has more in common with Team Fortress 2 than the games it’s based on. There’s two teams, plants and zombies, with each team having a different set of classes to pick from, and a whopping 26 different gamemodes to play. Part of the reason we all love Team Fortress 2 is because it’s a game with a good sense of humor, it doesn’t take itself too seriously and that’s part of the charm, and Garden Warfare 2 is just as absurd, maybe even more!

4. Counter Strike 2 (PC)

Launching recently, Counter Strike 2 is a port of CS:GO to the brand new Source 2 engine, replacing the original. While that might sound like a big deal, at its core it’s still the same game. Two teams, counter terrorists and terrorists, fight over a tactical objective, and when you die you stay dead until the round is over. There are no classes, only different weapons to equip. Counter Strike 2 is a more polished version of the game, with a few minor changes like some maps being rebuilt for the new engine. If you play Team Fortress 2, you’ve probably also heard of CS:GO, and Counter Strike 2 is the perfect opportunity to get into Valve’s other free-to-play online shooter

3. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege (PC/Xbox/Playstation)

Rainbow Six Siege is a tactical FPS where teams of 5, one attacking and one defending, fight over a tactical objective, such as rescuing a hostage, defusing the bomb, or taking control of an area. There’s also a whopping 65 different classes, or operators, to choose from. Siege is a much more realistic game than Team Fortress 2, but what they do have in common is a heavy emphasis on teamwork. In both games, cooperation is key to winning the match, something that makes Rainbow Six Siege approachable to TF2 veterans

2. Overwatch 2 (PC/Xbox/Playstation/Switch)

Hear me out before you crucify me, I know TF2 and Overwatch fans don’t exactly get along, but there’s a reason these games keep getting compared to each other. Both games have a wide variety of classes to choose from, both games have 2 teams of players fighting over an objective, and many of the gamemodes and heroes from Overwatch 2 are very similar to the gamemodes and subclasses from Team Fortress 2. We could sit here all day arguing over which game is better, who ripped off who, yadda yadda yadda, but the bottom line is that if you want to play a game like Team Fortress 2 that isn’t Team Fortress 2, then Overwatch 2 is about as close as it gets

1. Deep Rock Galactic (PC/Xbox/Playstation)

Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative PvE first person shooter, where teams of four dwarves mine through procedurally generated caves on teams of up to four players. Just like Team Fortress 2, Deep Rock Galactic understands that with classes less is more, with one class for each slot on your team, the Scout, Engineer, Gunner, and Driller, and each one filling a different role. In terms of cooperation and class balance, Deep Rock Galactic already has something in common with Team Fortress 2, but more than any other game on this list it is spiritually similar to Team Fortress 2. The PvE gameplay is a change of pace, but the community and quality of the game will feel familiar. I guarantee if you’re a fan of Team Fortress 2, then Deep Rock Galactic is right up your alley!
