The world of Hyrule is vast and sometimes Link needs a trusty steed to get him where he needs to go faster. Capturing and fostering the horses of Breath of the Wild is one of the game's great joys and this list will help you find the strongest, fastest, and most difficult horses to tame.

5. Wild Horses (early game)

Link feeds an apple to a get on the horse's good side.

Wild horses live in herds throughout Hyrule. They often can be found in the grassy plains outside of towns and castles. Taming a horse can be tricky for a beginner, but once you have tamed a horse you can register it and access it from any stable.

  • Wild Horses have stats rated on a 5 star scale for Strength, Speed, and Stamina
  • Horses also have separate temperament and bonding ratings
  • Horse stats can only be found by registering a horse at a stable
  • Wild horses are an easy way to travel the vast expanses of Hyrule
  • Wild horses must be tamed before they can be modified or called.
  • You can quickly tame your horse by offering it apples.
  • Once tamed, a horse will maintain any road they are on.
  • When you register a horse, you can name it, modify its mane, bridle and saddle, and access the same horse from any stable.
  • A registered horse will come to you when you whistle as long as it is in an accessible area.

How To Get Wild Horses:

Wild horses can be tamed by approaching cautiously and mounting them, then soothing them until their temperament calms enough that they do not try to buck Link off.

Stable registration is limited to five horses.

Malanya erupts from his fountain hungry for carrots.

Malanya is the Horse God of Hyrule. He lives in Malanya Spring, similar to the Great Fairy Fountains. He is capable of resurrecting any horse who dies during Link’s adventures.

  • Like the Great Fairies, Malanya requires an offering to awaken:1000 rupees on his first visit.
  • Malanya will resurrect the first horse for the price of his awakening.
  • Subsequent horse resurrections will cost one endura carrot each.
  • While not a rideable horse, Malanya establishes the strong bond between Link and his horses.
  • Malanya’s kinship to the Great Fairies is unestablished, but his home suggests he bears some relation.

How To Get to Malanya

  • Malanya Spring is located in the Faron region, near the Lake of the Horse God.
  • Take the southern fork east out of Harfin Valley and follow the road until you cross the bridge to find Malanya’s Spring.

Link is dwarfed by the biggest horse this side of the Gerudo desert.

The Giant Horse is a monstrous stallion who commands a herd in the Taobab Grassland. Taming the horse is a tricky endeavor as he is difficult to mount and even harder to tame. Once you have succeeded, his limitless stamina makes him a valuable steed to ride.

Giant Horse Stats

  • Strength: 5
  • Speed: 2
  • Stamina: Infinite
  • Temperament: Wild
  • The Giant Horse has limitless stamina meaning he can gallop from one side of Hyrule and back again.
  • He is so large that he is effectively a battering ram and will take out almost any enemy in his path.

How To Get the Giant Horse:

  • The Giant Horse can be found in the Taobab Grasslands east of Gerudo.
  • Taming him can take a lot of stamina and strength, so it is better to wait until you have accessed multiple stamina wheels or plenty of stamina potion.
  • Stealth is also a valuable asset as the horse will spook easily and run far if you try to approach it. Stealth enhanced clothing or potions will help Link get close.
  • Paragliding down on top of the horse from one of Taobab’s high trees is the easiest way to mount the horse.
  • Once you have mounted the horse, it will take at least two circles of your stamina wheel to properly tame him, so start soothing as soon as you have mounted the horse.

Link sits astride the ancestral Royal horse.

The Royal White Stallion is a descendant of the Hyrule Royal family’s Royal line. After Ganon’s occupation of Hyrule castle, the horse can be found wandering in the wilderness. Like the Giant Horse, the Royal White Stallion is difficult to tame.

Royal White Stallion Stats

  • Strength: 4
  • Speed: 3
  • Stamina: 5
  • Temperament: Wild
  • The Royal White Stallion is a reliably strong horse.
  • Once registered, the Stallion has a personalized bridle and saddle.

How To Get the Royal White Stallion:

  • The Royal White Stallion is found by speaking to Toffa at Outskirt Stable, enabling the quest.
  • From the stable, take the road North and the left at the fork in the road crossing Manhala Bridge.
  • The horse will be somewhere in this area, but be careful when you find him. He will run away at the first sign of a stranger’s presence.
  • Like the Giant Horse, the Royal White Stallion requires a high level of stamina to tame before he bucks Link off, so it is better to attempt to tame this horse after you have accumulated some stamina wheels or potions.

Link wonders whether this was worth it.

The Lord of the Mountain is a mythical creature named Satori who lives on Satori Mountain. Satori resembles a combination of a normal horse and the Blupees who populate some of the forests throughout Hyrule. He glows bright blue and only appears at random periods of time.

  • The Lord of the Mountain boasts stamina and speed surpassing any other mounts in Hyrule.
  • Satori cannot be registered at a stable, will not be bridled, and will disappear if Link dismounts for too long, so enjoy the ride while you have him.

How To Get the Lord of the Mountain:

  • Satori lives on Satori mountain but only appears randomly and rarely, and only at night.
  • The best way to know when the Lord of the Mountain is present is the appearance of a blue light on top of Satori Mountain, visible from nearby areas.
  • The Lord of the Mountain requires significant stamina to tame, so only attempt to mount once you have built up your stamina wheel or stocked up on stamina potions.
