Light pets are hit-or-miss with a lot of Terraria players. Most veterans would rather stock up on Shine and Night Owl potions, but you won't always have the money or inventory space to back it up. This is why it's great to always have a light pet to illuminate your path when your potions run out. With the number of available pets in Terraria, it becomes pretty hard to know which of them shed light. That's why we've made this list just for you! Here are all the Terraria Best Light Pets ranked from worst to best!

6. Shadow Orb and Crimson Heart

The most evil light sources!

The very first light pets you can get do not require you to beat any boss or go through any progression. The evil light pets, which are the Shadow Orb and Crimson Heart respectively, come from bombing or hammering your first few evil cores of the same name. Jump into your Corruption or Crimson caves and smash those hearts and orbs for a chance to get your first light pet.

Item details:

  • Summons a heart/orb to provide light
  • Use time - 20 (Very fast)
  • Sells for 1 gold and 50 silver

What makes it great:

  • Can be obtained right at the beginning of the game.

How to get it:

5. Magic Lantern

Your beacon in the darkest of the underground

The Magic Lantern is a pre-hardmode light pet that you can obtain from the Skeleton Merchant during a Full Moon. This nifty little follower produces a dim light around you while also making valuables shimmer. This makes it valuable for ore and treasure-finding sessions as it can decrease the amount of Spelunker potions you use. On a side note, it doesn't make treasure visible. You'll only be able to see sparkling light effects and not the treasure itself.

Item details:

  • Summons a magic lantern that exposes nearby treasure
  • Use time - 20 (Very fast)
  • Buy for 10 gold, sell for 2 gold

What makes it great:

  • Highly valuable for its treasure-revealing abilities

How to get it:

4. Fairy Bell

Hey! Hey, listen! LISTEN! HEY!

This light pet can be considered an upgrade from the Shadow Orb and Crimson Heart. The Fairy pet offers a brighter light than the previously mentioned light pets. Obtaining the Fairy Bell is only possible during Hardmode since you'd require the Wizard NPC and the Hallowed Biome to craft it. It can be said that the Fairy pet is a nod to the Zelda series as the color of the fairies are also similar to the ones in the hit Nintendo game. Although it has a similar model to the Pixie enemy, the Fairy pet will never spawn naturally with a yellow color.

Item details:

  • Summons a magical fairy
  • Use time - 20 (Very fast)
  • Sells for 5 gold

What makes it great:

  • Easy to craft
  • Better lighting as compared to pre-Hardmode light pets

How to get it:

3. Creeper Egg

No, not that kind of creeper

The Creeper Egg summons a Flickerwick light pet to illuminate your dark Terraria world. It can be obtained from Ogres during the Hardmode Old One's Army event and has similar power at stats to the Wisp in a Bottle. This is considered to be one of the faster light pets as the pet can not be easily left behind.

Item details:

  • Summons a pet Flickerwick to provide light
  • Use time - 20 (Very fast)
  • Sells for 2 gold

What makes it great:

  • Has a 1 in 4 chance to drop from early-Hardmode Ogres, making it easy to obtain earlier in the game.

How to get it:

2. Wisp in a Bottle

Your friendly neighborhood floating flaming skull

The Wisp in a Bottle is a post-Plantera light pet that has one of the brightest lights provided by any light pet in the game. It also has the special ability to be manually repositioned by using the directional keys, allowing you to scout through walls to see what lies ahead. Although the drop rate of this item might seem a bit on the steeper side (0.25/0.5 in Classic and Expert/Master modes), this is not really an issue since the mobs that drop it spawn in abundance.

Item details:

  • Summons a Wisp to provide light
  • Use time - 20 (Very fast)
  • Sells for 5 gold and 50 silver

What makes it great:

  • Very easy to obtain after Plantera is defeated
  • The manual repositioning ability is unique to this light pet and the Shadow Orb alone

How to get it:

1. Suspicious Looking Tentacle

Not to be confused with the Suspicious Looking Eye boss item

The Suspicious Looking Tentacle is a post-Moon Lord light pet that can be obtained by opening Moon Lord Treasure Bags in Expert Mode. This creepy little bugger is a very powerful light pet as it not only has the brightest luminosity (on par with the Wisp), but it also allows you to see treasure like the Magic Lantern. As an added bonus, you'll often see the Suspicious Looking Eye pet to look directly where an enemy or treasure is at.

Item details:

  • Calls upon a suspicious looking eye to provide light
  • 'I know what you're thinking....'
  • Use time - 20 (Very fast)
  • Sells for 10 gold

What makes it great:

  • Has all the best qualities of a light pet jammed into one, except for the manual repositioning

How to get it:
