Indie studio 10 Chambers Collective is hoping to scare the pants off of gamers and their friends with the upcoming survival-horror co-op game GTFO. The Swedish indie Studio, whose founder had previously been a game designer on the Payday series, has spent the last few years developing the game with intense visuals and visceral combat. The survival-horror shooter looks to build a claustrophobic atmosphere, similar to Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise, along with terrifying elements that will create a tense experience for a group of friends looking for cooperative gameplay.

Seriously, GTFO: Players need to stick together to ensure their survival in 10 Chambers Collective’s new 4-player FPS co-op game

The story of GTFO (yes, that’s seriously the name) centers around four player-controlled characters on a mission. They must descend deep into a massive underground environment, known as “the complex”, and are forced to explore and scavenge artifacts for “the Warden”. Each character’s story will unfold as players get deeper into the game’s campaign. GTFO is filled with heavy themes of survival-horror as players will need to make their way through dark corridors as a team – all while facing strange and deadly creatures.

GTFO Release Date

While no specific release date has been announced, the game is expected to arrive on Steam sometime this year. GTFO was announced back in 2016 by 10 Chambers Collective founder Ulf Andersson, who was previously the creative director at Starbreeze Studios/Overkill Software, the development team behind Payday and Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

During a recent interview at E3, Andersson commented about the game’s progress. He said that, since it’s reveal at the 2017 Games Awards show, development on the game has been focused on polishing the game’s mechanics and graphics. The development team has been playtesting through the game’s areas to further refine gameplay.

GTFO Gameplay

Much of the gameplay for GTFO was revealed in 2017 at the Game Awards show. The gameplay trailer showcased the game’s 4 player cooperative FPS action; as four characters are dropped into a dark, eerie complex filled with unnerving corridors and strange creatures. Players will need to rely on teamwork, stealth, and an arsenal of weapons and gadgets to survive.

A major focus for the developers, according to 10 Chambers Collective founder Ulf Andersson, was to strike a gameplay balance between tense stealth and visceral combat. Players will have access to an arsenal of firepower to engage foes in thrilling combat, but will also encounter situations where going loud is not always the best choice.

For the intense combat moments, players will be equipped with an array of weaponry, such as shotguns and assault rifles, to protect themselves against threats they’ll face together. Players will also have access to lethal gadgets, such as deployable turrets, to mitigate encounters with savage enemies – which there will be plenty of throughout the course of the game.

Creatures in GTFO are unnerving. They have pale skin, large tendrils, which they’ll use to attack players from a distance, and will come in different varieties. One creature, known as “The Scout” acts as a look-out for other enemies in the game. The Scout will throw out its long tendrils, like a tripwire, hoping some unexpected prey will trigger it. When triggered, the scout will alert nearby swarms to the squad’s presence – resulting in bad times for all. Players will need to avoid these frightening alarms by maneuvering around the creature quietly. Luckily, teams will be equipped with tools which will enable them to move throughout the complex unnoticed.

Don’t Touch: Players will need to avoid the Scout’s tendrils to pass through an area undetected.

For moments where being quiet is crucial to your survival, players will have access to an assortment of high-tech gadgets. Teams can plan ahead by using a scanner to determine the layout of what’s behind a locked door, so as not to be surprised if something sinister is lurking on the other side. Suppressors will also be available for moments where stealth takedowns are crucial.

The availability of an assortment of tools will enable teams to plan how they traverse the game’s claustrophobic environments. By equipping tools, scavenging for parts, and communicating together, teams will get the drop on the game’s various creatures lurking in the shadows.

Aside from providing players with intense stealth and combat, the development team is hoping to offer gamers with a wide-range of replayability. A feature in the game, known as the expedition director, will change the game to create a unique experience each playthrough. The feature will introduce procedural gameplay through a hand-tailored data set, which will offer challenging scenarios each session. This will include a map generator, where players will encounter new areas to explore each session.

GTFO Developer

GTFO will be developed by 10 Chambers Collective, an independent video game development company founded by Ulf Andersson, and will run on the Unity engine. Andersson is no stranger to 4 player co-op games, as he was formerly the creative director at Starbreeze Studios/Overkill Software, a development company that worked on the Payday series. For a game of this scope, the development team for GTFO is rather small, as there are only ten people currently working on the game.

GTFO News

10 Chambers Collective recently showcased GTFO at E3 2018 where they offered a hands-on preview to journalists, and a small number of fans, for the first time. It received a warm reception from critics, who enjoyed the nightmarish visuals and cooperative gameplay. The game was voted Best Cooperative Game at E3 2018 by DualShockers, and was one of the best games at E3 by Rock Paper Shotgun.

GTFO Price

As of now, there is no price point for GTFO on Steam, but is expected to arrive this year.
