Cuphead and his brother Mugman must repay their debt to the devil by collecting the souls of those who haven’t repaid their debt.

The game follows Cuphead and his brother Mugman, who live in the Inkwell Isles under the watchful gaze of Elder Kettle. Even after being warned not to, Cuphead and Mugman enter the devil’s casino and begin to gamble. After a winning streak, the devil reveals himself to the brothers and offers a bet: if the brothers can win just one more round, they will receive all the money in the casino. If not, the devil will take their souls.

Cuphead loses the bet by rolling snake eyes, and he and his brother beg for the devil’s mercy. The devil relents, but only if the brothers can collect the souls of others that owe him debts by the end of the next day. Before beginning their contract, Cuphead and Mugman visit Elder Kettle, who gives them a special power-up potion that allows them to shoot blasts from their fingers and also warns them that the debtors have the ability to shapeshift.

The brothers' journey across the Inkwell Isles, fighting those who have lost their souls to the devil and refuse to pay their debts. Once they have collected all of the soul contracts, they return to the devil’s casino, but the casino manager, King Dice, ambushes them before they can turn in their bounty. According to King Dice, he has made a bet with the devil on whether or not Cuphead and Mugman could carry out their task, making him one of the final bosses that the brothers have to fight. After he is defeated, the two face the devil, who tells them that they must hand over the soul contracts in exchange for joining his team. This is when the player can choose one of two paths: either the game ends with them transforming into the devil’s demonic lackeys, or the player can choose to refuse the offer, resulting in them fighting the final boss: the devil himself.

The additional downloadable content in Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course will feature a new playable character named Ms. Chalice, who introduces new abilities into the game. Along with this new character comes a new cast of diverse and difficult bosses for the player to challenge as well as new weapons and charms. A new nonplayable character by the name of Chef Saltbaker will be introduced as well. He will give the player a quest to uncover the secret of The Legendary Chalice. The DLC is sure to enhance an already well-developed and entertaining game.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course Release Date

The DLC for the popular indie game was announced at the annual E3 conference to the excitement of the gaming community.  StudioMDHR, an independent Canadian team, began development in 2018. The project is led by Art Director Chad Moldenhaur and Lead Game Designer Jared Moldenhaur. The DLC is expected to be released sometime in 2019, although no specific release date has been announced.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course Gameplay

Cuphead gameplay

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course introduces a brand new island for players to traverse and new bosses to fight. The gameplay for the DLC will be very much the same as the original game, but featuring food-themed bosses, characters, and locations.

Players can choose to play as the titular Cuphead or have a friend join in the fun and play as Cuphead’s brother Mugman. The player(s) traverse the Inkwell Isles collecting souls for the devil, which take the form of boss fights. Each boss is unique in their own way, not only having different appearances but different powers, shapeshifting abilities, and special moves.

For example, one of the first bosses that the player will encounter goes by the name Cagney Carnation, whose moveset includes lunging and throwing sycamore seeds at the player. In the final stage of the boss fight, Cagney Carnation spits dandelions that cause a nauseous effect, and he uses vines to trap the player.

Overall, the game relies heavily on multitasking due to the bosses executing several different attacks at a breakneck speed. Learning the boss’s moveset is vital to completing the level. Players may need to replay the same boss fight several times in order to learn the most effective way to beat the level.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course Developer

Cuphead was the first game released by StudioMDHR, a Canadian indie game development company run by brothers, Chad and Jared Moldenhauer. Other notable developers are Jake Clark, who worked on animation, and Eric Billingsley, who was the programming lead. Development for the game began in 2010 in the brothers’ home in the province of Saskatchewan, using the Unity game engine. The brothers were inspired by the animations from notable animating studios such as Disney and Fleischer, taking cues from their subversive and surrealist elements.

The character of Cuphead was inspired by a Japanese cartoon in which a man with a teacup for a head morphs into a tank. The brothers were fascinated by this strange animation and decided to replicate it, resulting in the game that we know and love today. While working on the game, they created over 150 character designs, including a kappa in a top hat and various characters with plates and forks for heads. They also admired the difficulty and the fundamentals of retro run-and-gun games and decided to emulate that in their game.

StudioMDHR hired a Romanian developer, a Brooklyn animator, and an Ontario jazz musician to work on the project in their quest to create a game that feels and sounds as if had been created in the 1930s.

Just recently, Funk o Pop announced that they will be entering the breakfast cereal market with their release of Funk O’s. Cuphead and Mugman figurines will be included in some Funko cereals. The company boasts that each cereal is “guaranteed to turn your milk a different amazing color.”

As far as any new games, StudioMDHR announced in an interview that they would love to create another game with the same art style as Cuphead. They said it may not be as difficult or set in the same time period as the beloved game, but that it would be very similar in style. One thing is for sure, we are definitely looking out for more games by this indie game studio!
