In every expansion that comes into the game, the Mythic Rares are some of the most hyped cards due to their strength as well as the value they can add to the deck. With the entry of The Brothers’ War, we are treated with new Mythic Rares to play with. Of course, the older expansions in Standard still have their place in this list.

15. Sanctuary Warden

What’s great about this card:

  • Shield counters are pretty powerful ways to protect your important pieces. Since Sanctuary Warden has two of those, it can dodge a lot of removals and board wipes.
  • This card is pretty expensive in terms of mana cost but it proves to be valuable in decks that utilize a lot of counters since it can use those counters to draw cards and create tokens.

14. Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim

Body Image

What’s great about this card:

  • The -2 ability of this Teferi essentially gives you a 2/2 attacker that just keeps on growing. Imagine an Ajani Pridemate but for control players.
  • Coupling the -2 ability with other aspects of control, you will definitely be able to draw more cards. Drawing cards means you will get a stronger attack due to the increase in power of the creature you summon. This also allows Teferi to have more loyalty counters since it gains loyalty counters every time you draw a card.
  • Setting back your opponent using the -12 ability may be a far fetch but when you get to do it, it is very satisfying as they will be left a single permanent card on the battlefield.

13. Saheeli, Filigree Master

What’s great about this card:

  • With the entry of The Brothers’ War, we are treated again with a lot of artifacts at our disposal. With Saheeli, Filigree Master, we can easily make artifact decks work again.
  • Since it only costs 4-mana to cast, it can easily be brought out and be used to dig through your deck.
  • Her -4 ability can also easily be used, allowing you a permanent boot to your artifact creatures and a permanent discount to artifact spells.

12. Serra Paragon

Body Image

What’s great about this card:

  • Serra Paragon is a staple in mono white Angel decks since it provides a lot of value. It basically functions just like Lurrus of the Dream-Den but it allows you to gain life if the permanent you brought back gets put into a graveyard or exiled.
  • Its 4 toughness also allows it to dodge some spot removal from red.

11. Raffine, Scheming Seer

Body Image

What’s great about this card:

  • Another great concept that protects your cards from targeted spells is Ward. With this, Raffine becomes protected unless the opponent opts to pay an extra one mana for their spell.
  • Connives X also allows you to surprise the opponent with a huge attack since you can choose one of your creatures to Connive X. This means you get to draw X cards and discard X cards. Every time you discard a nonland card this way, that creature gets a +1/+1 counter for it. The number of cards you connive is dependent on the number of attacking creatures so this really becomes overwhelming for the opponent.

10. Ob Nixilis, the Adversary

What’s great about this card:

  • Ob Nixilis returns once again with this demon of a card where you can have two copies of Ob Nixilis in a single cast. Due to its Casualty ability, you can sacrifice a creature you control as you cast Ob Nixilis, the Adversary, to create a non legendary copy of it. This means that you get double the trouble.
  • Spamming the +1 ability of both copies of Ob Nixilis allows you to deal a hefty amount of damage while also being able to support your life total
  • If you ever get in a rut, you can also use its -2 ability to create a chump blocker which can also ping any target with 1 damage when it dies

9. Kaito Shizuki

What’s great about this card:

  • One of the most important Planeswalkers in the current meta, Kaito Shizuki provides you a single turn where it cannot be removed, which means you can essentially have two activations of its ability before the opponent gets to deal with it.
  • The card draw that this card provides is very important especially since it is an essential card in midrange and control decks
  • The -7 ability, though it may be hard to even get close to, is a gamechanger and it can guarantee your win outright.

8. Mishra, Claimed by Gix

What’s great about this card:

  • Mishra, Claimed by Gix is a great card to have in any BR variant that uses a lot of creatures. The more creatures you have attacking, the higher the value Mishra provides as it gives you life equal to the number of attacking creatures and it also deals that same amount of damage to the opponent.
  • Melding this card to become Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia is a scary threat that can tilt the game towards your favor and create an insurmountable advantage against the opponent.
  • When this card melds, it can answer almost all potential problems that you may have on the board, allowing you to run away with the win.

7. Urza, Lord Protector

What’s great about this card:

  • Another great meld card, Urza, Lord Protector features a powerful Urza planeswalker that is super powerful in artifact decks. Melding this card to get Urza, Planeswalker is almost like a cheat code since its loyalty abilities can be activated twice.
  • Since you can activate the loyalty abilities of Urza, Planeswalker twice, you essentially can get a 4-mana discount on artifact spells you cast. Thinking about the endless possibilities with this interaction can send shivers down your opponent’s spine.
  • Even if you don’t get to meld this card, you can still get a lot of value from this card since it still gives a 1-mana discount and it is very easy to cast since it only costs 3-mana.

6. Sorin the Mirthless

What’s great about this card:

  • Despite vampires not being particularly strong in the current Standard rotation, Sorin the Mirthless is a key vampire piece that can be moved around especially in the meta-dominating Black + x Midrange decks
  • This planeswalker provides a lot of value in terms of card advantage since you can reveal the top card of your library and place that card in you hand. This causes you to lose life equal to its mana value but that is a small price to pay if the card you get is a key piece in winning.
  • Aside from this, Sorin also has the ability to create tokens which can be used to exert pressure on the opponent or simply as chump blockers on tight situations. Either way, a 2/3 flying, lifelink creature will always be valuable.

5. The Wandering Emperor

Image

What’s great about this card:

  • A Legendary planeswalker that you can cast anytime due to Flash is a very powerful card to have in any control deck. Aside from The Wandering Emperor being able to enter the battlefield at any time, you can also activate its loyalty abilities immediately once it enters the battlefield even on your opponent’s turn.
  • Its +1 can help you deal with an opponent’s attacker since it gives your creature a +1/+1 counter and first strike
  • The -1 ability allows you to make a chump blocker, while the -2 can immediately deal with any attacking threat that is tapped, allowing you to exile it and gain 2 life in the process.

4. Liliana of the Veil

Image
Body Image

What’s great about this card:

  • Liliana of the Veil is a staple card in Modern 8 Rack decks since it has a powerful discard mechanic that can completely disrupt the opponent’s gameplan before it even materializes
  • In the current Standard format, this card is an integral part of the midrange decks that have been dominating the meta. Its ability to remove threats, whether on the opponent’s hand or on their board, is a powerful tool that you can abuse alongside other key pieces in midrange decks.

3. Ao, the Dawn Sky

Image
Body Image

What’s great about this card:

  • Ao, the Dawn Sky’s value is one that can be utilized once it dies. This may be pretty funny but it is actually true since when this creature dies, you can either bring in permanents off the top of your library to your battlefield or provide your creatures with +1/+1 counters.
  • Ao, the Dawn Sky is also a pretty big attacking and blocking threat since it has both flying and vigilance.

2. Phyrexian Fleshgorger

Image
Body Image

What’s great about this card:

  • The ability to choose whether you get a 3-mana, 3/3 or a 7-mana, 7/5 creature is insane since this means that Phyrexian Fleshgorger will never be a dead draw in whatever stage of the game.
  • Aside from that, this creature is protected by the Ward ability. This means that the opponent has to pay life equal to this creature’s power if they want to target it with removal spells.
  • Menace and lifelink also makes this creature a good attacker as it can put in early damage if the opponent has not yet placed enough creatures on the board.

1. Sheoldred, the Apocalypse

Image
Body Image

What’s great about this card:

  • Sheoldred, the Apocalypse is still the most used card in all of Standard. This may not come as a surprise since the majority of the decks in standard are iterations of Black Midrange.
  • Sheoldred is a complete value engine that also disrupts the opponent’s flow of play by dealing 2 damage every time the opponent draws cards. This is a great way to deal with control matchups that rely on deck manipulation and card draw to win the game.
  • You also get to buff up your life total whenever you draw a card which means you can even dodge burn decks despite you having a much slower deck.
