Wii Fit Trainer Lunges into the Fray

I’ll be honest, I never saw myself playing Wii Fit Trainer in Smash 4, at least not seriously. It started as a meme, and before I knew it, I was destroying people in casuals. I think you’d do well to at least try a few matches using her. Below is a list of my favorite Wii Fit combos. I hope you give them a try!

The Best Combos

10.  Jab > F-Air

Jabs are Wii Fit's best friends (Starts at 2:27)

Jab combos are easier when the enemy is getting too close, instead of chasing down opponents. Use your jab to bury the opponent first. The opponent will mash out quickly and try to jump away, so you can catch them with a well-timed forward air. It’s a good set up for more fun things.

9. Nair > U-Air

Nair is actually pretty decent (Starts at 3:17)

Everyone underappreciates Wii Fit Trainer’s Nair, and the fact it can lead to some nasty combos makes me wonder how. It can even combo into itself, trapping enemies along the way. And finishing with a nice Up Air is so satisfying. At high percent, this has decent kill potential, and even if it doesn’t, it’ll make you smile.

8. D-Throw > B-air

Bair to victory! (Starts at 0:10)

Wii Fit’s Down Throw has a lot of potential behind it. It sends opponents just behind you, giving you an opening for great chases. Another option is to use Wii Fit’s Back Air. This move has incredible kill potential at mid to high percent. It’s an excellent way to distance yourself when the opponent is at low percent.

7.Falling Nair > Up B

The best offense is a great defense (Starts at 0:29)

Another Nair combo, but this one’s a bit different. I think you should use this one as more of a defensive strategy than an offensive one (more of a “get off me” tactic). You need to use Nair as you fall or at the peak of your jump, then use your recovery, a multi-hit for Wii Fit. It’s a decent way to make space for yourself.

6. Falling Nair > Up Smash

I-Frames are amazing (Starts at 0:33)

This combo is useful for catching opponents off guard. What’s more, Wii Fit’s Up Smash has first frame invincibility, so there’s a good chance that Wii Fit is covered on defense if the opponent retaliates.

5.Nair > Dair > Up-B

This can be quite impressive (Starts at 0:00)

Slightly harder to pull off in a real game, this combo can rack up damage pretty quickly. Since your opponent is likely to DI, I suggest either reading which way they’ll go, or cutting out the Up-B, since it’ll leave you open. You could switch the Up-B for, say, Uair. Either way, it’ll keep opponents on their toes.

4. Side Throw > Side-B

Simple but effective (Starts at 6:00)

A simple combo, this can be an impressive kill option or edgeguard tool with the right timing. You can change when Wii Fit hits their volleyball by when you press B the second time. You can also cancel the animation by pressing L or R and hit the ball with a different attack.

3. U-Tilt > Grab

Grab setups are great (Starts at 0:16)

While not technically a combo by itself, this is a good setup for other attacks. The U-Tilt stuns in the air long enough for you to grab them. You can be creative here and pummel opponents or prepare to launch them.

2. U-Tilt > Bair

More Bair tech (Starts at 1:11)

U-Tilt > Bair is another good “get off me” tactic. Wii Fit’s strong Bair sends opponents flying far enough for you to get your bearings. This attack works better at high percent.

1.  Nair > Side-B (Header)

That Header is crazy! (Starts at 1:17)

The great thing about Wii Fit’s Side-B is it’s not just for ranged offense. Her forehead actually spikes too! You need to get close to avoid the volleyball getting in the way, but it’s so satisfying landing the sweet spot.

In the end

Ultimately, Wii Fit’s got a lot more to offer in competition than she gets credit for. She’s a solid zoner and isn’t afraid to get up close. Give her a try next time you feel up to play some Smash. You won’t be disappointed.
