As 2020 comes to a close, many of us will breathe a sigh of relief, the world has been through the wringer this year. From a realistic standpoint, however, chances are things won’t magically get better because of the calendar change. But don’t hang your heads so low, there’s a lot of good things to look forward to. One of those things of course is the release of new RPG games to give you a nice escape from the humdrum.

Skellboy has a cute yet intriguing visual style, taking “2D” characters and putting them in a 3D space. This combo makes the world’s elements and inhabitants have an almost cardboard cutout look. The gameplay is just as charming as the look, Skippy is a hero back from the dead to save the world, after defeating enemies, he can take their body parts use them to fight in his action-packed quest.

Do you like anime girls? Do you like video games? That’s cringe bro. With that aside Atelier Ryza 2 is the sequel to the popular turn-based namesake. It’s absolutely jam-packed with features and things to do that it could probably have an article of its own. The combat reps a stylistic anime flair that is as good looking as the character models themselves.

This action RPG sports a low poly look that bridges both an angular and smooth style. As well as beautiful effects that complement the look. While navigating the well-crafted world, you must wield a great range of weapons as well as magical abilities to defeat enemies and bosses.

Outriders co-op that takes you and two friends across a diverse (and violent) planet. Throughout the changing landscapes, you’ll find some uniquely designed weapons and harness amazing and brutal powers to ravage your enemies.

Long name aside, in this dark sci-fi and fantasy mashup you take the role of Cahal. He fights for the sake of Mother Earth by taking three forms: human, wolf, and werewolf. Each form gives you different advantages that either help you sneak, work with humans, or tear enemies to bloody shreds to defeat an evil oil company. Good for werewolf lovers and environmentalist werewolf lovers.

7. Nioh 2: Remastered - The Complete Edition - Feb 5

Nioh 2: Remastered - The Complete Edition Gameplay

Another mouthful of a name but it’s certainly a familiar one. The samurai souls-like is coming back even better in a smoother, crisper, look. Collect awesome gear for your character and use both weapons and supernatural powers to take on ruthless enemies in a revamped and brutal combat system.

I honestly can’t tell you why so many developers have decided to make their titles longer than their gamer’s attention spans can handle. On the other hand, this first strategy RPG sports some old school gameplay with beautiful art. It’s all tied together by deep roleplaying mechanics. It’s a premier dungeon crawler.

Please game devs, no more long names. But I guess this one gets a pass. Because NieR Replicant is the prequel to the amazing NieR Automata. You’ll hack ‘n slash across a beautifully crafted post-apocalyptic world with refreshed graphics and an amazing story as well as a pretty great soundtrack as well.

10. No Place for Bravery - Q1 2021

Coming out sometime in quarter 1 (first 3 months) of 2021, this gorgeous, pixelated top-down action RPG has a unique visual style that shows the great effort put into it. You take the role of a father slashing your way to find your missing daughter. Combat emphasizes timing and strategy giving it some tactical depth.

11. Book of Travels - Q2 2021

This lovingly handcrafted MMORPG is a work of art to keep an eye out for in the 2nd quarter. Its stunning visual style complements a mystic, almost laid back atmosphere. Exploration is the very soul of the game, you’ll find many interesting characters and landscapes as you traverse this diorama-like world.

12. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 - TBA 2021

We’re back with the long names. But it’s not too much of a problem, seeing that the long-anticipated sequel to the first Vampire: The Masquerade is arriving in the coming year but a specific date is TBA (to be announced). Step into the sexy, blood-sucking metropolitan world of Vampire society. Use your supernatural powers to fight in the streets and your wits to gain control over turf.

13. Gotham Knights - TBA 2021

On the subject of bats, why don’t we head over to Gotham City for a bit? From the developers of the Arkham series, this smooth and crisp looking RPG can be played solo or with a friend. The story is along the lines of “Batman is dead” (probably...maybe) and Gotham is getting a lot worse, so now the Bat-Family has to step up and save the day in this loot-based beat-em-up that isn’t as serious as the Arkham games.

14. Hood: Outlaw Legends - TBA 2021

Just hear me out okay? Robin hood style game, but wait for it... but you and your merry-men are a gang. Hood takes medieval thievery and mixes things up in a PvPvE setting. You’ll compete with players in rival gangs and fight A.I. enemies to pull off epic heists.

15. Ghostwire: Tokyo - TBA 2021

Ghostwire: Tokyo Gameplay

Hey man, there’s a lot of ghosts here in Tokyo and it’s kinda annoying. Jokes aside, Ghostwire takes you across this action RPG takes you through this metropolis to fight supernatural monsters and spooks. A stand out neon style gives these supernatural battles some flair.
