Top Ten Fallout 4 Companions

Fallout 4 doesn't slouch when it comes to companions. There's 16 companions when you include all of the DLCs, not including any robots you may make with the Automotron DLC. Unfortunately, I can't rank them all, so here is my top ten!

10. MacCready

MacCready

MacCready. Robert Joseph MacCready. Ol' RJM. Or, as I like to call him, MacGreedy.
Don't get me wrong, I like MacCready. Enough. He was in Fallout 3 as mayor of Little Lamplight, a settlement inside some caves that was used as a tourist attraction before the war. Even then he was a little brat.

Look at him. Smug little bastard.

In Fallout 4, though, MacCready grows up and has a kid of his own, Duncan, who is sick with a mysterious disease.  His wife, Lucy, passes away, attacked by feral ghouls. MacCready's loyaly mission is to search Med-Tek for a cure for the disease his son has. He has a weakness for children, and also a weakness for stealing.
Idolizing you grants you the Killshot perk, which gives you a 20% bonus on headshots in V.A.T.S. Great if you're a sniper, which is MacCready's area.

9. Cait

Cait

Ah, Cait. Drunken, sassy Cait. She really likes drugs, and really likes to hit things. But there's a reason for that.

Cait's family was abusive, and after finally selling her into slavery on her 18th birthday, she began stealing small bits of caps to buy herself free. After she served justice(or vengeance, depending on your view) she began using drugs and alcohol to serve as a way to numb her feelings.

After her affinity quest is finished, you'll gain the Trigger Rush perk,  which has your action points regenerate quicker if you're under 25% health.

8. Curie

Image
Body Image

Look at her. Just look!

Curie was a Mrs. Orderly repurposed into a research assistant in Vault 81 after th Overseer of the vault sabatoged the messaging system, failing to notify the rest of the scientists to the nuclear attack.

CVRIE

Her designation was Contagions Vulnerability Robotic Infirmary Engineer, or stylized as Curie. She was made more human when one of the scientists, Collins, gave her the kowledge of every great scientist he knew (Kant, Einstein, Born, Darwin, Curie, Faraday, Turing, Braun) When they passed, Curie continued their work, eventually coming up with the cure to every possible disease the mole rats in Vault 81 had contracted.
Once you complete her affinity quest, you gain the Combat Medic perk, which allows you once a day to heal for 100 points if your health hits under 10%.

7. Paladin Danse

Body Image

Danse Danse Revolution

You first meet Paladin Danse at the Cambridge Police Station near Diamond City. He pretty much treats you like the other Brotherhood members do-cold, clinical, and very soldier-like. He sees you as someone who is inexperienced, not as a peer.

Image
Body Image

"Outstanding!"

This changes fairly quickly, especially after you choose to save him and convince Elder Maxson(who, by the way, showed up in Fallout 3 as a Squire under Elder Lyons) to spare him. Despite having him banned from the Brotherhood for being a synth(Oops, spoiler alert) you gain his idoization and grab the perk Know Your Enemy, which means you deal 20% more damage against Feral Ghouls, Super Mutants, and synths.

6. Deacon

Image
Body Image

Truly a man of mystery.

Deacon is available once you get to the Railroad headquarters. He'll be seen wandering around, watching you beforehand, disguised as several different people. Like a weirdo. An interesting weirdo.

Image
Body Image

"What's up?"

He changes his look depending on where you are even when exploring with you as a companion. During dialogue, it's difficult to gauge when he's telling the truth.  He even goes as far as to tell you he's the original founder of The Railroad as well as a synth, and giving you a fake designation code in case he loses control.
Gaining maximum affinity with him grants you the Cloak and Dagger perk, which gives you a 40% Stealth Boy duration bonus and a 20% sneak attack damage bonus.

5. Piper Wright

Piper Wright

Piper Wright is available as a companion after you arrive at Diamond City and finish the interview she requests.

Piper was originally from a small settlement where her father was in a small militia. After her father's death, Piper decided to investigate, where she found out the captain of the militia sold the settlement out to raiders. And thus began her journalism career.  Coming to Diamond City with her little sister, Nat, Piper started the paper, Publick Occurances.

"Hey, Blue."

Gaining her affinity gives you the Gift of Gab perk, which grants you double experience for successful difficult speech challenges, as well as discovering new locations.

4. Hancock

Image
Body Image

"No one in power should be comfortable for long."

Hancock is the Mayor of Goodneighbor, and can be a companion after completing The Dig.

After his brother, Mayor McDonough, ran for mayor of Diamond City under an anti-ghoul platform, John McDonough left Diamond City and came to Goodneigher, where a different threat loomed.  After finding the clothes of John Hancock, he overthrew the cruel leader of Goodneighbor, Vic, and appointed himself Mayor.

Hancock

Taking an experimental drug that used radiation, Hancock became a ghoul, declaring the man he once was, the man who let ghouls die after Diamond city, the man who let drifters get shot under the raider boss, was dead. He renamed himself Hancock.
Maxing out his affinity grants the Isodped perk. If you have 250 or more rads, you get criticals 20% quicker.

3. Nick Valentine

Image
Body Image

"Hey, chin up. I know the night just got a lot darker, but it won't last forever."

Despite not being romanceable, Nick Valentine has become one of the most popular subjects of fan art. Most of the pictures in his image search is fan art.  With his Humphrey Bogart accent, and detective noir trenchcoat, Nick Valentine has won my heart.

Given the memories of a pre-war detective, Nick found himself "in a dumpster" trying to gather his senses. It was revealed by DiMA that Nick doesn't have the memory available to remember much, so a lot of his past is lost. What he does remember, though, is saving a previous mayor of Diamond City's daughter. He was allowed to stay, despite being an obvious synth.

Finishing his affinity quest and having him idolizing you grants you the Close to Metal perk,  which gives you one extra guess when hacking terminals, as well as 50% shorter cooldown time on failures.

2. Preston Garvey

Image
Body Image

"Another settlement needs my help...in my heart."

Heading to Concord and to the museum will trigger the quest that leads you to this wonderful companion that gives you plenty of busywork. Upon giving you that request, you'll pretty much never get any peace and quiet unless you avoid him entirely.

Image
Body Image

I generally sing "Another Settlement Needs My Help" to "Another One Bites the Dust"

Preston is one of my favorites because I relate to him on a personal level. After the Quincy Massacre, he thought routinely about suicide.  Once the Sole Survivor gives him hope and becomes general, he gains some hope and continues to show the Commonwealth the Minutemen are back and ready to help.

When you have full affinity with Preston, you gain a 20% bonus to damage and damage resistance when faced with three or more enemies.

1. Dogmeat

I wanna smush his fae!

I know, I know. Everyone loves Dogmeat. You're tired of Dogmeat. Dogmeat Dogmeat Dogmeat. But hang on. I can make a case for this

"Boof." -Dogmeat, 2287

Dogmeat is the Numero Uno Fallout 4 Comanion because he never speaks. He never says a word. You can't lose or gain affinity, and you gain no perks that aren't tied with regular perk trees, but he never says a damn word.
He never complains about picking things up. Never complains about scouting a building for loot(which you can totally do, by the way) Never complains about having to hold things.  And last, but not least, he'll alert you to anything useful around. Even if it's a pair of glasses. That you don't need.

Also, he's cute.
