Although insects in real life are generally not welcomed, Bug Type pocket monsters can be a huge asset in the Pokemon GO universe!

The bugs listed below are noted as the best based on combat and/or nostalgia. Whether you are collecting them for fun or using them to battle or defend gyms, here are my top 10 of the Best Bug Type Pokemon! 

10. Armaldo

Tough as nails!

First on this list is Armaldo which is a Gen 3 pocket monster from the Hoenn region! According to the Pokedex, “Armaldo's tough armor makes all attacks bounce off. This Pokémon's two enormous claws can be freely extended or contracted. They have the power to punch right through a steel slab." Read more to find out why Armaldo is an excellent Bug Pokémon! 

What Armaldo Excels In 

  • First, Armaldo has a maximum CP of 2,848! 
  • Next, best movesets include Bug Blast, Fury Cutter, and Struggle Bug.
  • Offensive stats are strong with a score of 222!

  • Armaldo is a Dual Type Bug and Rock Pokémon. 
  • For Pokémon GO collectors, Armaldo is listed as #348 in the Pokedex. 
  • This Pokémon is boosted by partly cloudy and rainy weather conditions.

How to get Armaldo 

  • Armaldo cannot be hatched but can be evolved. 
  • Armaldo can be evolved with 50 Anorith!

9. Beedrill

Honestly, Beedrill was selected for this list because of nostalgia, as I captured this Gen 1 pocket monster back in September of 2016. One of the first Pokemon from the Kanto region is also known as The Poison Bee Pokemon. According to the Pokedex, “If angered, they will attack in a furious swarm.” Read on to find out the buzz about Beedrill! 

What Beedrill Excels In

  • Best movesets include Infestation, Poison Jab, Sludge Bomb, and X-Scissor. 
  • I have used Beedrill in battles previously and had some success! I would leave Beedrill out of the gyms. 
  • This bug and poison dual type Pokemon has a maximum CP of 1,846 and is considered as a good bug Pokemon for beginning Pokemon GO players.

  • For Pokemon GO collectors, Beedrill is listed as #15 in the Pokedex. 
  • Beedrill is boosted by cloudy and rainy weather conditions! 
  • This Pokemon can be normal or shiny.

How to get Beedrill

  • Beedrill can be found and caught in the wild; it cannot be hatched. 
  • Spawn locations include farms, forests, lakes, parks, and woodland areas. 
  • This Pokemon can be evolved from Weedle and Kakuna. 


8. Forretress

Forretress, also known as the Bagworm Pokemon, is considered as somewhat of a mystery, due to its large shell. According to the Pokedex, “Forretress conceals itself inside its hardened steel shell.   • Best movesets include Bug Bite, Heavy Slams, and Struggle Bug.
  • Maximum CP for Forretress is 2,282; it can hold up well in Battle!

7. Heracross

Heracross remains frequently on my best Pokemon lists because it is a stellar opponent in combat and an excellent defender of Gyms! In addition, Heracross is a rare Gen 2 pocket monster from the Johto region. Read on more to find why this Dual Bug and Fighting Pokemon is one of the best!

What Heracross Excels In

  • Best movesets for Heracross are Counter and Megahorn. 
  • Boosted by cloudy and rainy weather conditions. 
  • CP for Heracross is off the charts with a score of 3,101! 
  • Offense is strong with a score of 234; I use this Pokemon often in battle.

  • According to the Pokedex, “Heracross has sharp claws on its feet. These are planted firmly into the ground or the bark of a tree, giving the Pokémon a secure and solid footing to forcefully fling away foes with its proud horn.” 
  • For Pokemon Go collectors, Heracross is listed as #214 in the Pokedex. 
  • This Pokemon can be normal or shiny. 

How to get Heracross

  • Heracross can only be captured in the wild and cannot be evolved or hatched. 
  • It can only be found in Latin America, South Florida, or Texas. (I caught mine in Florida.) 
  • Spawn locations within the locations listed above include gardens, grassy areas, meadows, and recreation areas. 
  • There is only one Pokemon in the Heracross family; there are no evolutions.

Illumise is a Gen 3 pocket monster that originated from the Hoenn region. The Pokedex states that “Illumise leads a flight of illuminated Volbeat to draw signs in the night sky.   • Best movesets for Illumise are Dazzling Gleam and Struggle Bug. 
  • Illumise would be great for beginning Pokemon trainers due to its stats. 
  • Maximum CP for Illumise is 1,771.

Another excellent addition to the Bug Pokemon list, Masquerain is a Gen 3 pocket monster. Stemming from the Hoenn region, Masquerain is known as the Eyeball Pokemon.   • Best movesets are Air Slash, Infestation, and Silver Wind. 
  • Combat stats are strong, as Masquerain’s Offense score is 192!

  • Masquerain can be evolved with 50 Surskit Candy. 
  • Spawn locations, like many Bug-Type Pokemon, consist of farmland, forests, gardens, and meadows.

Parasect, a Gen 3 pocket monster from the Kanto region, is known as the Mushroom Pokemon. The Pokedex states that “Parasect is known to infest large trees en masse and drain nutrients from the lower trunk and roots.” Although I certainly would not want Parasect near my trees, I do want Parasect in my Pokemon GO collection!   • Best movesets are Bug Bite, Cross Poison, and Solar Beam. 
  • Highest CP for Parasect is 1,859!
  • This is a good Pokemon for newbie trainers, as Offense is 1,859.

  • Parasect is a Dual Type Bug and Grass Pokemon.

  • Spawn locations include Farmlands, Forests, and Golf Courses! 
  • This Pokemon can be only captured in the wild; it cannot be hatched. 

3. Pinsir

There cannot be a best Bug Pokemon list without Pinsir! A Gen 1 Pokemon from the Kanto region, Pinsir is known as the Stag Beetle Pokemon. According to the Pokedex, “Pinsir is astoundingly strong. What Pinsir Excels In 

  • Best movesets include Bug Bite, Close Combat, Fury Cutter, X Scissor, and Vise Grip!
  • Due to high CP (2,959), I like to use Pinsir in Battles. 
  • Offensive stats are excellent with a score of 238!

  • Can be normal or shiny. 
  • For Pokemon GO collectors, Pinsir is listed as #127 in the Pokedex! 
  • Pinsir is boosted by rainy weather conditions.

How to get Pinsir 

  • Pinsir can be hatched with 5 KM eggs. 
  • Spawn locations include meadows, nature preserves, and parks. 
  • This Pokemon cannot be evolved; it can be captured in the wild or hatched.

2. Scizor

Rock, paper, Scizor!

This red-hot Gen 2 pocket monster derives from the Johto region. Also known as the Pincer Pokémon, Scizor is a Dual-Type Bug and Steel Pokemon. The Pokedex states that “Scizor has a body with the hardness of steel. It is not easily fazed by ordinary attacks.”  Read on to find out more about Scizor! 

What Scizor Excels In

  • Best movesets are Bullet Punch, Fury Cutter, and Iron Head!
  • Maximum CP for Scizor is 3010, which is twice as much as many bug Pokemon. 
  • Offense stat is high with a score of 236!

  • Even though Scizor is red, it is vulnerable to fire attacks. 
  • For Pokedex collectors, Scizor is listed as #212 in the Pokedex. 
  • Weather boosts for Scizor include rainy and snowy weather conditions.

  • Scizor can be captured in the wild or evolved with 50 Scyther. 
  • Spawn locations include cities, farmland, gardens, golf courses, and woodlands. 
  • This Pokemon cannot be hatched, only captured.

Last, but not least, on the awesome bug Pokémon list is Scyther!  This pocket monster is a Gen 1 original that crawled in from the Kanto region. Also known as the Mantis Pokémon, the Pokedex states that “Scyther is blindingly fast.”  Read on to find out more about Scyther!

  • Best movesets are Aerial Ace, Air Slash, and Bug Buzz. 
  • Maximum CP is 2,706! 
  • Offense is strong with a score of 218!

  • Spawn locations include farmland, grassy areas, meadows,
