D&D is a world where items matter almost as much as your abilities. Enhancing your character and pushing the limits of power, wondrous (magical) items are treasures that every adventurer is looking for after an encounter is beaten, or when they visit a shop.

Here are the top most useful and important magical items for a D&D Sorcerer.

10. Cloak of Protection

A D&D character's most loyal piece of attire is always the cloak.

Likely a known name to most D&D players, Cloak of Protection and similar items (Ring of Protection) have been around through almost all editions of D&D, and for good reason.

As a caster, your defenses and especially your AC isn’t really your forte. You can increase your defenses with Mage Armor but even then, considering your smaller health pool, decreasing the chance of getting hit as much as you can is very, very wise.

Cloak of Protection grants you +1 AC and saving throws while you wear it. It’s also ‘uncommon’, which means it’s just a little harder to find than your everyday items. Should be easy to acquire in most 5e games.

9. Staff of Defense

So you can whack better, and get whacked less.

Without repeating myself much, Staff of Defense is another item that’ll increase your AC, which will increase your survivability. Remember that most smart enemies will target casters first, you are most of the time the biggest, scariest threat.

What is also great about this staff is that it has 10 charges which can be used to cast the spells it holds within, 1 charge for Mage Armor and 2 charges for the Shield Spell. As a sorcerer you might have a lot of spell slots but your known spell list is greatly limited, and hence anything that can save you from taking spells into your list is a win.

Since the staff regains 1d6+4 expended charges each day, if you get this, you can safely remove Mage Armor and Shield from your spell list, and get more spell variety. If you run out of charges, just don’t roll a 1, and you’ll keep the staff and it’ll continue regaining charges. Otherwise break.

8. Ring of Spell Storing

Better than a diamond ring.

More spells, more spells and more spells. Ring of Spell Storing is especially advantageous for Sorcerers.

This ring will keep up to 5 levels worth of spells within until the attuned wearer uses them, which can be 5 of level 1 spells or a level 3 and a level 2 spell and so on. Since you are a Sorcerer, unlike a wizard, instead of having to prepare appropriate spells, spend a day and cast them into the ring for future usage, you can just cast whatever you want in it with your unspent slots that day. That’s just a quality of life thing that’d make it easier on a campaign where time’s tight.

The spells cast from the ring also use the spell DC, spell attack bonus and spellcasting ability of the original caster!

7. Mastery Ioun Stone and Ioun Stone of Leadership

The whole party is likely after them.

Ioun stones are items that’ll likely have your party members arguing about who deserves them the most for a good hour or two, if not more.

Though if you can get your hands on these stated above, it’s certainly worth it. I grouped them up together here since they are both ioun stones, but they don’t need to be used together.

Mastery Ioun Stone is incredible for everyone, +1 proficiency skill? That’s another AB, +1 to skills and more, but for you, it also means +1 Spell Save DC. Which means your spells will be %5 easier to affect enemies. And that %5 is a lot in D&D.

The stone of Leadership is +2 Charisma. Instead of using your Ability Score Improvement for maxing your main spellcasting ability, if you get this and make sure you don’t lose it, you can take one of those sweet sweet spellcasting feats, or something else that tickles your fancy.

6. Pearl of Power

More spells. Always more spells.

Who doesn’t love more spell slots? Who doesn’t love more sorcery points?! This item allows you to regain an expended spell slot, unless it’s a 4th level or above which gives back a 3rd level spell slot. However this, for you, means 3 sorcery points.

You can either use that 3rd level slot on a 3rd level spell, or if you are in dire need of a spell from 2nd circle or lesser, convert it into sorcery points and spend it to your heart’s desire.

5. Staff of Power

Basically a second sorcerer by your side.

Remember Staff of Defense? Now this, is better.

One if not the best staff a caster can wield, giving you +2 to AC, saving throws and spell attack rolls, it’s an incredible staff to wield. Not only that, it also contains properties that you have 20 charges to spend on, 2d8+4 of them are renewed each dawn!

You can use our charges on spells like Fireball, Wall of Force and more, or if you are feeling particularly angry and want to whack someone? Just smack them with your staff and add 1d6 damage to it with Power Strike.

It also has a one time trick to save you out of trouble. You break the staff, and it explodes like a powerful magical bomb.

Let’s just hope you can escape the explosion yourself, though.

4. Astral Shard

Now you are navigating the plane properly.

Introduced in the Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, sorcerous shards are brilliant items that will grant your sorcerer various interesting powers.

This specific one grants you the ability to teleport to an unoccupied space you can see within 30 ft of you, when you cast a spell using metamagic feats.

Why is this so high up in my list? Like I said above, as a caster you are a huge threat. One of these days you will be in a situation where an enemy has gotten in melee range of you, or is about to. And your party members could be dead, or might be fending off other enemies, unable to help you.

With this you can instantly open up the distance between you and the enemy, and escape death.

3. Rod of Absorption

Image
Body Image
Enemy mage who? More like, just deadweight.

Sometimes, the most dangerous enemy is not a barbarian charging you or a ranger shooting you from afar; but an opponent enemy caster. This rod gives you the ability to turn their spells irrelevant, the ones that target only you and aren’t area effects.

It can absorb up to 50 levels of energy over its existence before becoming useless. Not more. It cannot bypass 50 either at the last spells. You can also store up to 50 levels of energy within, and as a sorcerer can spend these levels for more spell slots, and thus sorcery points. This is an incredibly powerful item for a caster to own.

2. Robe of the Archmagi

Image
Body Image
What kind of a caster are you if you are not wearing robes?

Don’t worry about the name, as it is not only for warlocks or wizards, it’s also incredibly powerful for sorcerers and one of the must-have items. As a sorcerer you’ll likely never wear armor. This, is the best armor you can ever get.

Just need to find one colored appropriately to your alignment, and your base AC will be 15+ your Dexterity modifier. Not only that, but you will also have advantage on saving throws against magical effects and spells—not only that! But your spell DCs and spell attack bonus will increase by 2!

If you can find this in your game. You’ve done it.

1. Bloodwell Vial

Image
Body Image
You might get mistaken for a vampire. But it's worth it.

As a sorcerer, you use a lot of spells where your enemies need to resist against. And since you don’t have the wide variety of options like wizards where you can pick and choose, you need to make sure your chosen spells are as effective as possible.

Hence the Bloodwell Vial, introduced in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, is the the 1st item in my top 10 list for sorcerers. Depending on the rarity of the vial, it gives you a bonus to your spell DCs from +1 to +3 as well as your spell attack rolls.

On top of that when you roll any Hit Dice to heal yourself while you own this vial, you gain 5 sorcery hit points.

Now you can flex on the wizards. Bloodwell Vial full details; http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/wondrous-items:bloodwell-vial
