Every gamer must have played at least one Zombie game in their lifetime seeing as the grimey creatures know how to creep their way into our lives somehow or another. With the PS5 racking up some new IP’s in the zombie genre, here’s 15 zombie games you may want to check out for those times you’re looking for some mindless entertainment.

15. Cards of the Dead (Xbox One, Xbox Series, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

Cards of the dead - Release Trailer

If you never thought a deck of cards could make your heart burst out of your chest, you haven’t played Cards of the Dead. A survival game where you play as three characters trying to deliver an antidote to a lab that can save humanity from a zombie outbreak… only, you’ll have to survive first.

If you’re in the mood for a cheap and simple game of spooky cards, then Cards of the Dead offers you a laid back approach to the zombie-survival genre. The game is quick and easy to understand and pretty addictive once you get the hang of it. Not for everyone, but definitely worth a look.

14. Outbreak (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

Outbreak Definitive Collection Launch Trailer

Let’s be honest, not the greatest reviewed franchise but somehow earned a steady fanbase so Outbreak must be doing something right. As the title suggests, an outbreak of zombies has erupted and it's up to you and other survivors to, well, survive.

Outbreak is a throwback to classic horror games like the OG Resident Evil, and if you’re looking for that sort of nostalgia then this franchise is sure to be a treat. The game may be clunky but having to survive in dark and enclosed environments is what zombie fun is all about.

13. The Persistence (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

The Persistence Enhanced - Update Launch Trailer | PS5

You’re orbiting a black hole, your crew has died, you’re a clone of your dead self, and your dead crew are now zombies trying to kill you. A cool set piece for sure, The Persistence knows how to set the scene.

The dreary atmosphere of the spaceship immerses you well as you sneak around trying to jumpstart the ship's engine. There’s a great sense of progress as you begin with limited resources and rack them up so that more of your clones can survive; it’s a pretty fresh take on the horror/sci-fi genre.

12. Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse (Xbox One, Xbox Series, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

Stubbs The Zombie - Launch Trailer | PS4

Finally, a game that lets you see the zombie’s point of view. You play as Stubbs the Zombie in a futuristic 50’s metropolis, tearing through the streets to survive (as the zombie this time).

Though a tad dated, the humor here is a true delight and fits in well with the dark, comedic tone the game is going for. If you’re looking for a blast from the past with updated controls then this game is definitely for you, especially if you feel like siding with the undead.

11. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, PS5)

What do you do when a game franchise succeeds to unprecedented heights? Throw in a zombie mode! You and up to three friends plow through droves of the undead in a desolate location in this tight-knit, FPS shootout.

Not much in the way of a deep story, but the stage is set for you to become one badass zombie killer. Controls are solid, the world is crammed with useful resources, and there’s never a dull moment as hordes of zombies swarm your screen. Get your friends and have a blast.

10. The Last Stand Aftermath (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, PS5)

The Last Stand: Aftermath - Launch Trailer | PS5, PS4

Whatever you do, don’t get attached to your character in this frightening tale. You play as members of a survivor colony on the hunt for resources after a plague has wiped out mankind and turned them into… well, you know.

This is a neat, top down experience that shows you a dilapidated, post-zombie world in all its ugly glory. The volunteers you play as are destined to die as they are already infected, and you’re playing for the good of the colony, not necessarily yourself. It’s an interesting take on communal survival and what it means to be human.

9. DYSMANTLE (Xbox One, Xbox Series, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

Dysmantle - Welcome to a bittersweet post-apocalypse | PS5, PS4

Even if you had the foresight to prepare for a zombie apocalypse, you’re still gonna run out of food, right? DYSMANTLE is another top down adventure where you have to traverse a post-apocalyptic world in search of supplies.

If you like a zombie game with less shooting and more smashing then this game is definitely up your alley. There’s a surprising amount of gratification one feels when you hack your way through zombies, crates and drywall; all for the purpose of finding the right resources for your adventure. Fun design for sure.

8. World War Z: Aftermath (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, PS5)

World War Z: Aftermath - Launch Trailer

That rare time when the game is arguably better than the film? It’s yet another outbreak where you and three of your friends decimate stampedes upon stampedes of undead in the broken streets of Europe.

Much like the movie, this is a fast-paced, heart-pounding adrenaline rush where you have no minute to spare as zombies rush you with ferocious speed. Even with a not so rich storyline, it’s hard to get bored in this insane fight for survival.

7. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, PS5)

Rainbow Six Extraction - Official Lore Gameplay Trailer

Man, did the aliens really have to bring a parasite with them?! You and up to three friends have to fly out to the infected zones where an alien parasite has broken out across the world.

These zones are beautifully disgusting as you duck and weave through collapsing streets and gooey, overgrown, parasitic monsters. The game definitely knows how to challenge players who are accustomed to these outbreak type scenarios, a game that really makes you earn your title of “survivor”.

6. God of War (PS4, PC, PS5)

God of War - Be A Warrior: PS4 Gameplay Trailer | E3 2017

Okay, okay… While not exactly a zombie game per se, it’s clear that the dead are walking along alcoves of Midgard in the form of Draugr, Hel-walkers and “all manner of creature”. On your way to the top of the mountain to spread your wife’s ashes, you play as Kratos as he trains his son to slice through any and all monstrosities that stand in their way.

There’s no better gratification than ripping through a draugr with the Leviathan Ax, or scorching a Hel-walker with the fiery Blades of Chaos. There’s even undead revenants and travelers that all want to kill you and your son. Upgrade your armour and weapons and stock up on those Indunn Apples lest you end up a Hel-Walker yourself.

5. Back 4 Blood (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, PS5)

Back 4 Blood - Launch Trailer | PS5, PS4

When faced with eternal doom, the best you can do is laugh in their face. You play as several colony survivors in a post-apocalyptic outbreak of whom you’re basically at war with.

Back 4 Blood takes everything you like about zombie shooters and hits you up with 7 zany characters that you’re sure to find entertaining. The weapons are tight, combat is slick and it’s hard to put the controller down when hordes of Ridden are coming at you at a breakneck speed.

4. Dying Light 2 - Stay Human (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PC PS5)

Dying Light 2 - Stay Human Accolades Trailer

You’ll definitely be a morning person after playing this nightmare. In yet another post-apocalyptic world, 15 years have passed since and you play as a pilgrim, Aiden, traveling from settlement to settlement in search of his lost sister.

Dying Light takes the set up of Will Smith’s I Am Legend and plops you into one scary world. Unlike Mr. Smith, however, at least you have some allies and plenty of cool resources to help you out. But make no mistake, a game like this ain’t for the faint of heart as some nefarious fiends may make you long for isolation.

3. Resident Evil 2 (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, PS5)

Resident Evil 2 - Launch Trailer | PS4

Everything you could ever dream of a remaster is here in Resident Evil 2. Kennedy and Claire, two scrappy survivors of a zombie outbreak, need to escape Racoon City as it has become overrun with you know what.

You have the choice to sneak past these creatures or take them head on. Either way, this is one thrilling and heart pumping adventure that is on par with contemporary third-person shooters of today. Whether a nostalgic trip or a first time run, this is definitely a game to check out for zombie fanatics everywhere.

2. The Last of Us Part II (PS4, PS5)

The Last of Us Part II - Enhanced Performance Patch | PS5

Probably Naughty Dog’s most immersive game yet, The Last of Us Part II knows how to rack up the stress of its players on a physical, emotional and even intellectual level. You play as Ellie on a vengeful hunt across the dilapidated streets of Seattle and as Abby, the target of Ellie’s vengeance.

Both characters are devoured by the horrors of the infected as well as the deranged ideologies of long time survivors. Just when you think the coast is clear, the game will slap you with the most terrifying escape route you’ll ever have to trek and throw monstrousties at you like the repulsive Rat King. Best you save up for therapy after this one.

1. Resident Evil Village (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, PS5)

Resident Evil 8: Village - Official Gameplay Trailer | PS5 Showcase

Resident Evil has done it again with this latest installment. You play as Ethan searching for his lost daughter in a derelict village, full of both atmosphere and the wicked. If that wasn’t creepy enough, just wait until you meet some of the deranged residents lurking in this ghoulish town.

There’s a good balance of mystery, combat, puzzles and psychological thrills with Village which is sure to keep you engaged every step of the way. The level design and architecture really shine in this installment and with Ethan as badass as ever, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment with every baddie you take down. Good luck.
