Top 15 Best Anime RPG Games to Play Today

Updated:
17 Mar 2023

The anime-RPG genre combines some of the most mind-blowing animation with sophisticated (at times) stories. We are drawn to these games because of their diverse cast of characters and the ability to put ourselves in the shoes of anybody we are playing with. Giving you the freedom to change everything from the weapons you use to the personality of your character.

RPGs offer us enormous open-world concepts with numerous quests and side missions. These are the games we play for hours on end, struggling to stay up till the sun rises the next day.

So, let's move on to the top 15 anime RPG games that every fan of video games should play.

15. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot gameplay: https://youtu.be/pcvUKcANsT4

If you're a Dragon Ball Z lover, you'll appreciate Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Starting off as Goku on the Nimbus (isn't that every DBZ fan's dream?) brings back memories of when you were a kid waiting for the next episode to come out. It is a free-roaming action RPG in which you can play as Goku and various other characters from the Dragon Ball Z universe.

The game takes you on a thrilling and colorful adventure through some of the most notable arcs in DBZ history, such as the Saiyan Saga, Frieza Saga, Cell Saga, and Buu Saga. You'll have to button-mash your way through the game's toughest opponents.

The game takes you through an exciting and vibrant journey as you play through some of the most infamous arcs in DBZ history, including the Saiyan Saga, the Frieza Saga, the Cell Saga, and the Buu Saga. You will have to button-mash your way through the strongest foes in this game, such as Majin Buu and Cell. However, some enemies, such as Raditz and Nappa, may be amusing. (Remember the 90s commercial where they said, "Gohan's in danger," and it was Super Saiyan Gohan vs. Raditz and Nappa?)

With this anime fan favorite, you could possibly (if you're simply rushing through, as in not doing side missions) finish the game in 35 to 40 hours; but, taking on the actual path of the Saiyan will take you upwards of 80 to 100 hours to attain true peace. This fighting masterpiece is now available for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox series x/s

14. Scarlet Nexus

Scarlet Nexus gameplay: https://youtu.be/A1dHwD6GyeQ

Scarlet Nexus is another hit from Bandai Namco Entertainment (they also had #15). In this science-fiction-themed RPG, you will explore and defend the world of New Himuka from brain-hungry aliens known as Others (they remind me of the clickers from The Last of Us). Himuka is a highly advanced technological society. Everyone who lives here is linked to one another by the Psynet, which connects everything and everyone via the brain for the "benefit of the citizens" (which sounds really suspect if you ask me).

Gamers take on the role of Yuito Sumeragi or Kasane Randall in third person. Two stories that take dramatically different paths; which story you pursue is up to you, but the only way to see the big picture is to play through Yuito and Kasane's experiences.

During the game, the two utilize different weapons for combat, but both are capable of using psychokinesis (moving objects with their minds). Throughout the game, there are supporting individuals who assist you in fighting Others; their skills range from duplication to teleportation.

Finishing this game will take you 25 to 30 hours; but, if you want to take in the entire tale, it will take you 50 to 60 hours. Scarlet Nexus is available on the PS4, PS5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

13. Pokémon Legends Arceus

Pokémon Legends Arceus Gameplay: https://youtu.be/I4RynqpahT8

Square Enix's excellent team has provided us with our next game. Final Fantasy XV, one of my personal faves, is set on Eos (a world like Earth). You take on the role of Notis, the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Lucis. On this remarkable mission to reclaim his throne, he is accompanied by Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto.

You will explore the darkest dungeons, scale the highest mountains, drive into new territory, and, of course, ride chocobos. You will obtain royal weaponry throughout the game, which are some of the most formidable weapons accessible to Notis. The animation in combat is incredible since he creates weapons out of thin air every time he uses them. Finding some of these will be difficult due to their location in places like Balouve Mines Dungeon (a handful of which you receive as part of the main story line).

You will need to be at least level 50 (trust me, I tried when I was level 34) to take on the boss to get Bow of the Clever. If you have played any of the games in the Final Fantasy franchise, then you know one of the highlights is being able to summon ancient beings called Astrals to help you fight, and FFXV is no different. You will have the choice of six different gods that will cause massive damage to enemies.

FFXV contains nearly 200 side quests, and because this is the royal edition, you have access to all of the game's DLC. I know what you're thinking: "With all of this stuff, how long will it take to finish this?" You may play for 28 hours just focusing on the major objectives, but if you want to be a perfectionist, you are looking at 94 and a half hours. Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition is now available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

11. Genshin Impact

Image

Genshin Impact Gameplay: https://youtu.be/HLUY1nICQRY

Genshin Impact is an open-world anime game set in the fantasy world of Teyvat. You start the game with the twins, Aether and Lumine (travelers from another world) who arrive at Teyvat. When you try to leave this weird new realm, you are stopped by a man who claims to be God, and he separates you and your sibling.

You will choose which twin you wish to play as at the start of the game, and the other will be taken away. You awaken alone (with your powers sealed for some reason), and you must now go around Teyvat's seven kingdoms in search of your twin. Unlike the rest of our list, this game is free to play (with in-game purchases, because how else are they going to generate money), and I believe it has a lot to offer for a free game.

Despite the fact that there are over 20 playable characters, a party of up to four players can be formed at any time. As a result, depending on who you play with, you will have different fighting techniques. Except in dungeons and during actual conflict, characters can be exchanged at any moment. There are five different sorts of weapons available, each with unique attributes that may be found throughout Teyvat.

This game's enormous open landscapes remind me a lot of Zelda's Breath of the Wild; there are so many magnificent sites to visit, and HP doesn't repair itself; you have to consume food or visit a statue. With everything this action adventure RPG has to offer, you may finish the game in approximately 55 hours, but if you want to say you touched every single part of Teyvat, you'll need 485 hours. Genshin Impact is now available for iOS, Android, PC, PS4, PS5, and the Nintendo Switch.

10. Kingdom Hearts 3

Kingdom Hearts 3 Gameplay: https://youtu.be/zrunNL3xsUY

Another masterwork from our pals at Square Enix (another one of my favorites). Kingdom Hearts 3 is a must-have if you are familiar with and have been a fan of the franchise since its inception. 14 long years have gone by since KH2, and I must say that I never imagined KH3 would honor us with its arrival.

KH3 is the franchise's 12th game and the third in the main series, following The Dark Seeker Saga. Sora, Donald, and Goofy will journey to several Disney-themed locations, like the Kingdom of Corona (Tangled), Arendelle (Frozen), and the Caribbean (Pirates of the Caribbean), to stop Master Xehanort's plan to forge the X-blade. Every location you visit is as interesting as the next, and in some

There are numerous characters from previous games in this one, and certainly, it can be difficult to remember who everyone is at times. The game does, however, feature a portion where you can repeat earlier memories and gain a sense of what happened before Kingdom Hearts 3. I didn't think the series could get much better, but I was proven wrong with more weapon and spell possibilities, allies, fierce combat, stunning open worlds, and hands down one of the best gaming soundtracks to date.

KH3 is a piece of art, with an expressive and captivating storyline, it will be one of the best RPGs you've ever purchased. With that in mind, you'll need 29 hours to finish the main plot and 63 and a half hours to get 100%. Kingdom Hearts 3 is available for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

9. Monster Hunter Rise

Monster Hunter Rise Gameplay: https://youtu.be/a6C5lH5b-f4

Capcom's next game is Monster Hunt Rise, in which you play as a hunter charged with various hunts (missions), such as fighting a large monster or hunting and capturing specific types of creatures. Each successful hunt produces more resources and materials, which you can mix to create stronger weapons and better equipment.

I'll tell you to become used to dying if you're not adequately equipped for a hunt. If you don't arm yourself for combat, completing a mission could take you 30 minutes to an hour. You can create a variety of armor and weaponry to prepare yourself for anything that comes your way. It is an action RPG game with online multiplayer features. So, whether you play alone or with pals online (playing with buddies speeds up the hunts), Rise is a must-have for your collection.

The main plot of Rise can be completed in 20 to 25 hours. If you want to take on the ultimate challenge and discover if you are a true hunter, you will need to put in more than 150 hours of gameplay. Monster Hunter: Rise is now available on Nintendo Switch and PC.

8. Yakuza: Like A Dragon

Image

Yakuza: Like A Dragon Gameplay: https://youtu.be/cTOAd2fq740

Yakuza: Like a Dragon tells the narrative of Ichiban Kasuga, who discovers his former boss betrayed him after serving 18 years in prison. He embarks on a quest of self-discovery with the support of several friends to uncover why he was betrayed.

If you've played any of the previous Yakuza games, you're familiar with the beat-'em-up fighting style. Like a Dragon supplies a new turn-based RPG fighting method in which up to four party members can be present at the same time. The map is another appealing aspect of the game. In other Yakuza titles, the maps appeared to be too small , like A Dragon provides you with varied maps with more locations to go and things to do.

One of the game's themes is the power of friendship. Ichiban, as you can see, is in both amusing and strong circumstances with his pals. This makes sense given that the creators confess that Like a Dragon was influenced by two of anime's "Big Three" (One Piece and Bleach). If you're a big anime lover, that should offer you even more reason to play. Yakuza: Like A Dragon will take you 45 hours to complete the main plot and 101 hours to complete the game. It is available for the PS4, PC, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

7. Tales of Arise

Tales of Arise Gameplay: https://youtu.be/ykWm2kOCpE4

Tales of Arise, a new title from Bandai Namco Entertainment, is out now. Arise is the seventeenth installment in the Tales series. Tales of Arise currently, unlike some of the other games in the series, lacks a multiplayer option. At its foundation, the story of Arise is one of rebellion. The characters all come from different parts of a social structure that has benefited or injured them, and they are all united in their desire to change the system for the better.

You will take on the role of Alphen, a swordsman who is a Dahnan slave who has lost his memory. Later, he joins forces with other rebels to embark on a journey to fight the five tyrant lords that rule Dahna. Tales' battle system is excellent, with a near-perfect balance of tactical and agile gameplay. The gameplay will remind you of Devil May Cry at moments.

Tales of Arise is a stroke of genius with a profound tale and fascinating characters that will have you captivated as you struggle your path to genuine freedom. Tales of Arise will take you 35 to 45 hours to finish with a total time of 110 hours for full completion. It is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

6. Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Image

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Gameplay: https://youtu.be/t-iNpDKuYb8

The tenth game in the Xenoblade Chronicles series is Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The game is set in the world of Aionios, where two nations, Keves and Agnus, are at odds. You take on the roles of protagonists Noah and Mio, as well as their friends Eunie, Taion, Lanz, and Sena, to unify their sides against a threat no one could have imagined.

Even if you've never played a Xenoblade game before, you'll be able to appreciate this wonderfully well-written story. There are references to the first and second xeno, but they are unimportant in this game.

In the past, the Xeno series has been known to send you to strange locations. So Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is no exception; your excursions will take you inside a big discarded sword at one point, and along the branches of a massive tree at another. As you travel the universe, you will encounter odd animals, create your team, complete side missions (which are always optional), and learn everything there is to know about Xenoblade.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will take you 61 and a half hours to complete, but 166 hours to complete fully. The Nintendo Switch version is now available.

5. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Image
Body Image
Final Fantasy VII Remake Gameplay: https://youtu.be/sz9QWTcbXYE

Yes, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is another smash blockbuster from Square Enix (I can't help myself; they make some of the best RPG games). It totally reimagines the original game's opening, expanding a five-to-eight-hour chunk into a full 40-hour RPG. And every second is a joy, with some of the best Final Fantasy gameplay and storyline we've seen in years.

We begin the game as Cloud, a soldier hired by Avalanche, a gang of eco-activists battling against Shinra, a super-corporation. Barett and Tifa, two Avalanche members, will aid you throughout the game. What I enjoyed about the remake is that it was thoroughly researched. There are entire chapters from the original game that have been updated with new characters and scenes.

The remake features an entirely new fighting technique, which results in better fights than we remember from the original, and you can switch between characters while battling. Now, the Final Fantasy 7 remake isn't like FFXV because it lacks an open world premise, but I can honestly say that they did the game right, which is why it's still a fan favorite today. The remake of Final Fantasy 7 may be completed in 25 to 35 hours, however platinuming the game would take roughly 85 hours. It is available for the PC, PS4, and PS5.

4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Image
Body Image
Fire Emblem: Three Houses Gameplay: https://youtu.be/ADaRsEhTB70

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical role-playing game in which you play as a mercenary-turned-professor in a military college run by a powerful church. The school is divided into three houses, each of which is associated with a specific section of the district. You must choose a house to assist in operating at the start of the game; nevertheless, your choices matter because each house has its own cast of characters and storylines.

So, depending on which house you side with, the events of the game will be very different (which means yes, you are going to want to do more than one playthrough). This is a big decision: each house has its own unique characters and storylines, and the events of the game play out very differently depending on where you pledge your allegiance early on. (This also makes the game ideal for multiple playthroughs.)

From the massive library to the magnificent dining hall, the institution gives me Hogwarts vibes. There is so much history in the school's hallways and so many places to explore. If you are unfamiliar with the game, the combat parts may be difficult to understand, however there is something they added to the game that will help. It's a device that lets you rewind battles when you make a mistake, giving you another chance to battle without having to start from the beginning.

The tale in Fire Emblem: Three Houses spans several years, and you will see your pupils mature and flourish as a result of your influence. It will take you 49 and a half hours to finish, and 206 hours to finish entirely. It is now available for the Nintendo Switch.

3. Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker

Image
Body Image
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker Gameplay: https://youtu.be/fwsnh5sgzA8

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker is the fourth expansion pack for Final Fantasy XIV, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game published by Square Enix, one of my favorite companies (this is the last one on the list, I swear).

Endwalker brilliantly crafts a good narrative full of intriguing twists, endearing character interactions, and well-crafted conflicts. Its climax provides a satisfying conclusion to the struggle between the deities Hydaelyn and Zodiark, but you'll want to go into Endwalker with a solid understanding of XIV's backstory. This last chapter significantly relies on the narratives, stories, and characters from the previous expansions.

The action in this game begins slowly, but once the ball starts rolling, it rarely stops until you reach the conclusion. As it deals with abandoned, famished, and distrusting factions wrapped in a civil war, I believe this game does a wonderful job of highlighting some of the darkest sides of the world. Certain tasks in the game require you to use a diverse cast of characters in your party. This makes the game more thrilling because you can't just use one or two people to complete the task.

When everything is said and done, Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker will take you 50 to 135 hours as a single player, if you are trying to do it co-op, you better settle in for a long time because you are looking at over 830 hours. It is available for the PC, PS4, and PS5.

2. Hades

Image

Hades Gameplay: https://youtu.be/Zpo2UgLkLxo

Hades is an epic dungeon crawler with addicting gameplay, stunning art, fascinating characters, and a brilliant story.’ You take on the role of Prince Zagreus (son of Hades) as he tries to break out of the underworld. This takes the player on a voyage through Tartarus, Elysium, and many other places.

When you die, you are transported to the House of Hades, where Zagreus can converse with characters from Greek mythology such as Nyx and Achilles. You can explore, present gifts for prizes, and eventually advance the main story. Each voyage through Hades delivers something unique; no two runs are the same. Enemies appear at random, or there is a new door or area to explore that was not previously present. As a result, there is no way to prepare; simply expect the unexpected and enjoy the trip.

There are various Infernal Arms (Hades' weapons) to choose from; you'll find what works best for your playing style. Because the fighting layout is simple, it will be easy to adapt to. You will be rewarded with goods such as money and power-ups as you journey into the underworld. It will take you 22 hours to complete the major story of Hades; however, full completion will take you 96 hours. Hades is available on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

1.  Persona 5 Royal

Image
Body Image
Persona 5 Royal Gameplay: https://youtu.be/SKpSpvFCZRw

Persona 5 Royal is the final game on our list. It is the sixth game in the Persona series, a remake of Persona 5 from 2017, and it brings the game justice. If you are unfamiliar with the original game, it is about a Japanese adolescent who is wrongfully accused of a crime and ends up with a criminal record. He befriends other "delinquents," and they discover the ability to force adults to confess to their misdeeds (by fighting their monsters within).

Half of the game is spent doing standard teenager things like exams and working, while the other half is spent fighting monsters and trying to recruit more teens on your side. A lot of the game is the same in Royal, but there are additional elements. Two new characters, as well as a third semester in the game with its own tale (as if it were a DLC). I believe the additional plot and final boss are significant enhancements to the game.

Royal just appears to move faster, and battle scenes with bosses aren't as strange as they were in the original. Persona 5 Royal's story is fantastic, and it will ring true for everyone who remembers being a misunderstood teen. It will take you 103 hours to complete the main story line and 143 hours to complete the game entirely. Persona 5 Royal is available on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
